The WyeREC Arboretum Proposal
Queenstown, MD
LARC341 - Regional Design Studio
For the WyeREC Arboretum Proposal, our studio worked together to create new programming for one of Maryland’s research facilities, the WyeREC center. The studio was divided into three groups: the Ecological Restoration group, the Trails and Arboretum group, and the Educational and Signage group.
I was a part of the Trails and Arboretum group with Juan Bajana, Calvin Hruby, Rachel Kinsey, Zhenkai Mao and Tiara Rachman. We were in charge of the grading of the site, the materiality of the trails, and the planting plan for the proposed arboretum. In addition to the proposed planting plan, we filled out the arboretum application form for the WyeREC facility to showcase what requirements they need to fill to be a certified arboretum.
The WyeREC Planting Plan Proposal
With the planting list from the Ecological Restoration group, the Trails and Arboretum group divided the land to create different habitat and plantings. This is the pre-colonial forest section of the proposed arboretum, where we emulated what the forest system looked like prior to European colonization. 35 trees and woody plants were used to create a dense, lush environment for users to experience.
The Ecological Restoration group proposed 80 trees and woody plants for the Trails and Arboretum group to create a planting plan. This was to fulfill one of the arboretum level 2 accreditation requirements, which was to have 100+ labeled tree woody plants, also shown in our arboretum planting plan.
